Matsushima is a three-colored scarf that draws inspiration from the nature of Northeastern Japan and the traditional "kogin zashi" embroidery patterns. Its name comes from the city of Matsushima, a place I fell in love with during my travels in Japan, surrounded by a shimmering turquoise sea and pine trees swaying on tiny islands.
Traditional kogin zashi motifs are usually very precise and geometric, but I chose to draw my knitting motifs freehand, breaking the symmetry to create surfaces that feel more varied, organic, soft, and intriguing.
The design process was fully digital, from the first sketches to the final pattern. The scarf was made in collaboration with Kutomo Holopainen in March 2022.
