In autumn 2024, Young Finnish Design, together with PaaPii and Finsket, launched a print design competition seeking fresh perspectives and bold ideas. The goal was to find designers capable of creating something truly new for the brands’ collections, not just following their existing styles. The competition ran from September 1, 2024, to January 31, 2025, with two categories: PaaPii (women’s wear) and Finsket (men’s/unisex). I designed my winning entry for PaaPii.
My collection consisted of four original prints, two of which – Löytöretki (Expedition) and Sarastus (Dawn) – were selected for PaaPii’s final collection. The collaboration was launched on October 3, 2025, featuring three dresses, three blouses and four pairs of trousers. The prints were also added to PaaPii’s fabric shop.

Valoa männikössä (Light in the Pine Forest) is inspired by the rugged beauty of coniferous woods and the ever-changing light that filters through them. The collection explores how light transforms the forest throughout the seasons: from the pale blue glow of winter to the golden hues of dusk and the deep tones of night.
Rather than depicting the forest literally, I approached it as a memory or dreamscape. The shapes of trees and undergrowth are abstract, allowing the imagination to wander. I wanted to preserve a sense of rawness: visible pencil lines, brush textures, and irregular details that give the prints their distinctive hand-drawn character.
Before arriving at the final designs, I experimented with various materials and techniques. I initially planned to create some prints suitable for rotary screen printing, but eventually turned to colored pencils and watercolors, which brought a softer and more cohesive atmosphere to the collection.
My process is rarely linear – I work intuitively, moving between hand-drawn and digital methods, sketching, discarding, and rediscovering ideas along the way. Sarastus, for example, began as a watercolor painting layered with an ink drawing photographed through textured glass, adding depth and a dreamlike quality.

Löytöretki (Expedition) is inspired by the forest floor: mosses, twigs, and pinecones turned into tiny treasures. The print is playful and spontaneous, like a wanderer collecting finds along the way. Its rough pencil lines and relaxed composition bring a lively, tactile energy.
Sarastus (Dawn) captures the first light of morning as it filters through the trees. Soft watercolours create a misty, delicate atmosphere: a calm and contemplative moment before the day fully awakens.
